Tasked with redesigning and rebuilding a landmarked home in Old Town, Middlefork navigated strict building codes and Landmark ordinances to create a modern, spacious residence while preserving its historic character. Working closely with the Commission on Chicago Landmarks and local groups, the team retained the original façade and the front 28 feet of the north and south exterior walls—remnants of the 1890 Chicago Workman’s Cottage—while demolishing the rest. The site was excavated for a deeper basement, making way for a 4,464-square-foot home with dramatically higher ceilings and state-of-the-art technology. True to Landmark requirements, the new structure remains entirely hidden behind the preserved façade, seamlessly blending history with modern living. The result is a thoughtfully designed 4-bedroom, 4.1-bath home that meets the owner’s needs while ensuring strong resale potential.
